Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection caused by a germ called the tubercle bacillus. It can affect the lungs or other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, the skin and the bones.
The disease has been on the increase in the developed world in recent years, probably because of increased air travel and movement of people from areas where it is common.
Following a diagnosis, a TB nurse will see a patient for assessment and treatment. We are also involved in educating affected families / communities about the condition.
A dedicated TB clinic is currently offered on Monday mornings and Thursdays at Gravesham Community Hospital. Parents may call direct for advice and treatment, but youngsters are normally referred by their doctor or health visitor. A vaccination clinic for newborns and infants is also held at the hospital.
