Mental health and wellbeing

Child + adult mental health services liaison (CAMHS)

Our three liaison nurses are specialists in child mental health issues. They are part of multi-disciplinary teams that work together to promote the emotional well being and mental health of all children and young people up to 18 years of age.

The teams include representatives from child psychology, education, social services and voluntary groups. Providing short-term support and treatment, they help children and families learn how to cope when a range of problems occur.
These include:
• Emotional difficulties (anxiety, anger, stress, bereavement and loss)
• Behavioural problems
• Family and relationship problems
• Problems associated with development difficulties

The specialist knowledge of the teams helps to ensure the child is fully assessed and the most appropriate intervention and treatment is provided. The focus is on prevention and early intervention, through the support of children, adolescents and their families who are experiencing emotional difficulties and behavioural problems.

Referrals to the service are generally made by health and child care professionals, including GPs and school nurses.
