Our specialist diabetic nurses help to promote the wellbeing and life chances of children and teenagers who have diabetes. The service is being developed in line with the National Service Framework for Diabetes and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence Guidance, with a view to reducing the risk of developing complications in later life.
One nurse holds paediatric diabetes clinics with Dr Kala Pathy, a consultant paediatrician, at the peadiatrics out patients department at Maidstone Hospital.
Other nurses work closely with consultant paediatrician Dr Gupta and hold weekly joint clinics and monthly nurse-led clinics. There are also transition clinics held in conjunction with the adult diabetes team once a child becomes 16.
Drop-in sessions in schools and home visits to families are offered. Education is available not only for children and immediate families, but also for friends and anybody else involved in the child’s care.
